Cultural Celebration of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding in the State of Kuwait

The Media Committee of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding concluded its visit to the State of Kuwait, which lasted from 9 to 11 May, as part of the cultural activities scheduled for the fourth season of the Award. The Media Committee held cultural seminars, media interviews and official meetings with the representative bodies of culture in the State of Kuwait, aimed at bridging cultural bonds between the Award and the entities interested by the field of translation.

Dr. Hanan Fayadh and Dr. Imtenan Samadi (from the Media Committee of the Award) presented introductory papers of the Award at the Language Center Symposium at Kuwait University, which was held under the patronage of the Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Director of the Language Center Dr. Abdul Hadi Al-Ajmi. The seminar focused on the role of translation throughout history in promoting the nations.

Fayadh and Smadi also presented the objectives, criteria and conditions of the Award, and highlighted the efforts undertaken in building bridges of cooperation between academic translators. The presentation was followed by a number of inquiries about the award, the choice of languages in each season, the nature of the winning works in previous seasons, and where the Award stands with the presence of similar projects in the Arab world.

The delegation also met with a group of Kuwaiti intellectuals interested by the translation field at the Muse Lounge library, where they discussed the role of awards in supporting the cultural and intellectual movement.

Dr. Bader Al-Duwaish, Assistant Secretary-General of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, received the media delegation of the Sheikh Hamad Award in order to discuss cooperation means between the Council and the Award. The delegation also met with a number of academics in public meetings such as the Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Center for Talents as well as academics from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Kuwait. The delegation visited Al-Sahafa Street and met with the editorial officials of several magazines to talk about future cooperation.

Kuwaiti TV channels celebrated this cultural event as several interviews were held in Kuwait TV, Al-Rai TV, Al-Bawadi and Babtain. The Sheikh Hamad Award cultural visit also received extensive press coverage in many newspapers and Kuwait News Agency.
